Redefining Advocacy.

CAL’s core mission is the pursuit of equal justice under the law for indigent New Yorkers in their criminal appeals and other post-conviction proceedings. We believe all people deserve dignity, respect, and the right to be heard and treated fairly when their liberty has been taken from them or threatened, regardless of their ability to pay for an attorney. But in our clients’ complex lives, we also see opportunities for service beyond the crucial matter of the appeal.

Seeking Justice.

The Justice First project is one of CAL’s proudest achievements. Recognizing that sometimes an appeal simply can’t root out and remedy a miscarriage of justice that results in a wrongful conviction, CAL created Justice First. Justice First carefully screens cases for intensive re-investigation and collateral attack back in the trial courts. But Justice First is only one of CAL's special projects.

Centering Clients.

Incarceration can be an isolating and dehumanizing experience fraught with challenges. That is why CAL's advocacy extends beyond the confines of the appellate process. From helping clients obtain proper medical care in prison, to providing re-entry support and resources upon release, CAL is committed to addressing its clients' needs in the courtroom and beyond.

Our COVID-19 Response

CAL’s highest priority is the health and well-being of our employees and our clients. In an effort to protect our communities, and in light of the postponement of all non-essential court functions, CAL's office will be closed until further notice. Our clients should be assured that we will continue to work diligently on the matters entrusted to us. Communication by phone and mail, however, will be impacted. CAL asks that its clients, their families, and others, utilize our voicemail system, with the assurance that attorneys and staff will be regularly monitoring that system and will make every effort to respond to voicemails as soon as possible. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to monitor developments with the novel COVID-19 coronavirus.
