special projects: parole advocacy/prisoner reentry project CAL recently began a Parole Advocacy/Prisoner Reentry Project designed to help our clients who have upcoming parole hearings by preparing them for reentry into society. Starting in September 2007, CAL has had, on-site, two social work graduate students assisting our clients with their housing, employment, mental and physical health needs once they leave the prison walls. Additionally, law student externs work with CAL's attorneys on preparing parole advocacy letters on behalf of those of CAL's clients who are coming up for discretionary parole release. This project is run by the Director of CAL's Justice First Project, Claudia Trupp. Starting in September 2008, she will be assisted by Elizabeth Howell, a post-graduate Kirkland & Ellis Fellow. A Columbia Law School graduate, Elizabeth has broad-based experience in homeless advocacy, drug dependency issues, healthcare access, disability law, community outreach, and prisoners' rights. She will be a tremendous asset to CAL as we seek to address our clients' challenges to successfully re-entering society. |
