employment opportunities: law student interns/externs - academic year
The Center seeks part-time volunteer law student interns or externs for the Fall and Spring Semesters every academic year.
We are looking for first and second year students who are self-starters. Applicants must have good communication and “people” skills and a strong interest in criminal defense work. The internship has three components:
(i) helping with our new “Collateral Consequences/Reentry Project.” Students will apply to the court or parole board for Certificates of Relief from Disabilities for eligible CAL clients, do institutional advocacy for incarcerated clients, assist clients with immigration problems, advocate for discretionary parole release on behalf of selected clients, and provide referral reentry assistance for clients about to be released from prison;
(ii) working closely with experienced appellate attorneys on substantive writing projects, including briefs and motions; and
(iii) assisting with the “Justice First: Collateral Relief Project,” which is designed to detect wrongful convictions by aggressively pursuing claims of actual innocence through collateral litigation.
