Center for Appellate Litigation

employment opportunities: fellowship opportunities

The Center for Appellate Litigation has created “Justice First,” a new project whose mission is to aggressively investigate viable claims of wrongful conviction. We seek to sponsor fellows whose work begins each fall. As this work is considered “collateral” representation, it is not funded through governmental agencies. The fellow would be responsible for obtaining funding through an appropriate public interest fellowship program.

The fellow will work with a group of attorneys who will be responsible for investigating clients’ claims of actual innocence. Responsibilities will include reviewing client correspondence and transcripts, creating and implementing investigation strategies and conducting legal research into and drafting motions to vacate convictions in the state courts and pursuing those motions in federal court where appropriate. Fellows will likely gain trial and appellate experience.

The work creates an extraordinary opportunity for a recent law graduate to develop both investigative trial skills and insights into appellate practice. Additionally, the project will seek to promote opportunities for scholarly investigation of the problem of wrongful convictions.

Above all the fellow will have the chance to directly impact the lives of the wrongfully convicted. For a more detailed description of the program, click on our “Special Projects” section.
